Grant Overview

Marcy Storlie Kimminau, National Chairman

The purpose of this grant program is to give financial support to projects in local communities that exemplify the mission of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. To accomplish this, NSDAR will make grants available to fund initiatives in these three mission areas. Examples of grant funding available:
Historic Preservation – Restore or refurbish an historic site, such as a community cemetery or landmark building
Education – Donate books or resource materials for tutoring programs
Patriotism – Erect a granite monument to veterans in a city park.
Only Non-profit 501 (C) (3) entities may apply for these funds. Grants will be awarded for projects that relate directly to the mission and objectives of historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Only one grant funding will be awarded to any applying entity as part of the Wright Administration President General’s Project. Only one grant funding will be awarded to any one entity as part of the 2010-2013 Wright Administration President General’s Project. Grants of $1000 to $2000 amounts are encouraged with a cap of $10,000 for grant requests. Applicants will be required to match the grant award 1:1 in order to allow broader distribution of funds. Matching funds are not required to come from the organization applying for the grant but may come from multiple donors or fundraising.

A national chairman administers this committee serving with three national vice chairmen who are responsible for the three grant areas of historic preservation, education and patriotism. These proposals will be submitted to the national chairman, Special Projects Grants Committee, and will be evaluated by independent judges selected for this purpose. Successful applicants will be notified by NSDAR and will be required to complete all projects within one year of the awarding of the grant. Communications about these grants to all units of NSDAR, compliance, monitoring and final completion reporting are the responsibility of the national chairman, Special Projects Grants Committee. Funding for the grants will be provided through the 2010-2013 Wright President General's Project Fund.

August Leimbach Biography

August Leimbach (February 12, 1882 - December 18, 1965) was a German-American sculptor. A native of Germany, he studied art and sculpture, and after immigrating to the United States in 1910 he worked passionately as an architectural sculptor. He eventually settled in the St.Louis area.

August Leimbach is best remembered for his work with Arlene B. Nichols Moss and the Daughters of the American Revolution in the creation of the Madonna of the Trail monument in 1927. Twelve monuments were cast and placed in twelve designated cities across the United States, marking the National Old Trails Highway from Bethesda, Maryland to Upland, California. The sculpture itself are representative of the strength, courage, and role of the pioneer woman in establishing the early western territories. Each monument were dedicated in their respective state in 1928 and 1929.

Leimbach died at age 83 and is buried next to his wife Frieda in Michelstadt,Germany.

Sculptor August Leimbach

Created by sculptor August Leimbach and funded by contributions, the Madonna of the Trail monuments were intended to provide a symbol of the courage and faith of the women whose strength and love aided so greatly in conquering the wilderness and establishing permanent homes. Dedicated in 1928 and 1929.

Her History

Arlene B. Nichols Moss, chairwoman of the DAR Committee, envisioned a statue similar to one she had seen in Portland, Oregon by the Denver sculptor Alice Cooper. In Washington Park, it features Sacagawea, the Shoshone Native American woman who helped guide Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on their search for a water route to the Pacific Ocean. An acquaintance recommended the sculptor August Leimbach of St. Louis, Missouri.

In the Summer 1928 issue of The Federal Illustrator Magazine, Leimbach described his work. "The monument, 'The Madonna of the Trail' was modeled for art-stone (granite) and done in a time less than a month, to be placed in 12 states, from Maryland to California as a trail marker on the old National Trails.

"The idea I had, when I modeled the design was this: The pioneer mother with her children was waiting for the father at their blockhouse in the wild West, for the father did not come home as he had promised. She, believing him to be in danger, put her little child in a blanket, grasped the gun and with the boy ran out in the field to look for the father.

"The gun is sketched from the gun of Daniel Boone, with his carvings on the shaft. On the ground is prairie grass and cactus brushes, also arrowheads, and on one side in the shadows, there is visible in the original, a rattlesnake, partly covered by grass.

"When I was a schoolboy in the old country, the American History of the pioneer days made a deep impression on me. I thought often of those who had left the old home and all that was dear to them and had come to this country to find a field for their ambition.

"When I came to America, I often saw these people of the pioneer type, strong and brave and always ready to protect themselves against any danger. Asked to make a sketch model for a monument o fa woman of pioneer days, I was inspired by my own impression of these people I had met, and the Madonna of the Trail is the result."

Colorado, Lamar
This was the fifth Madonna of the Trail to be unveiled and dedicated with the largest crowd ever assembled in Lamar. Businesses and schools closed and a parade and dance were held. Area pioneer mothers were honored during the festivities. Although Judge Harry S. Truman was listed on the printed program, he was unable to attend. This statue sits in a very visible location on Main Street at the Colorado Welcome Center. Rededication ceremonies were held in 1988. DAR Chapter Fort William Bent in Lamar is the guardian of the statue.
